You cant get enough good advice about networking
You cant get enough good advice about networking Larina Case wrote the following advice, you can go to her blog too, more nice insightLarinas blog . Her message is universal, however, does have a small slant toward those who are networking for their own businesswell, then, arent we all our own business? I am not a comfortable networker, like many others out there. I have to work really hard at it. Many of Larinas pointers initially make me squirm and think, I cant do that. But what happens is the more I read about networking and the more I stepoutside of my comfort zone, the less frightened or hesitant I am. I watch others and learn. Ultimately, you will have to find a style of your own, in the absence of any networking style, try someone elses on for a while. Yes, you will make mistakes, learn and move on. Challenge yourself, work with a friend who will hold you accountable for going to an event. Make it fun. I was working with one client who said she and her friend actually challenged each other to meet at least 1 new person by the end of the networking event. How to Get Attention, Network Like a Pro, and Be Memorable The following tips make you an exceptional networker, self-marketer, and self-promoter (not in the obnoxious way) by helping you capture attention and get into both short and long term memory. Network Yourself. People will remember you if they can fit you into one of their existing mental networks. This might be a person or group or type of people, such as John Smiths friend, from the CBI group or executive coach. Dont stop here though, use the other tips to make YOU stand out from within that group. Make yourself an expert. When you are a subject area expert, people automatically think of you and you dont even have to try to be noticed. For example, at work, select a key aspect of your job and learn everything possible about it and let people know what youve learned. Be a magnet. Draw people to you by exuding confidence, charisma, and passion. No one can resist these characteristics- theyll give you a magnetic personality. Adopt a signature look. Get noticed and be memorable for your fashion flare. Your signature look can be a color, an accessory, a style (for example, 1950s glam), or a haircut. Take a side. Rather than worrying about offending people and choosing a middle of the road position, take a stance. People will respect you for it and it will show your conviction and courage. Pay a compliment. Interestingly, focusing on others is a powerful way to be noticed. Pick something specific and let someone know that you like it. For example, tell someone in your networking group what specifically you found intriguing about the way they presented themselves. Speak with confidence. Your voice is a powerful tool in getting attention and recognition. Speak loudly, clearly, and at a natural speed (not too slow or youll be dull and not too fast or people will think youre nervous). Smile with your eyes. Research has shown that people find smiles to be most genuine when your eyes scrunch up a bit (dont worry about the crows feet!). These form of smiling puts people at ease and makes you more likeable and influential. Be a great storyteller. One of the best ways to command attention is with an engaging story, preferably one that includes some humor. At work, instead of saying, The result we got was, tell a bit of the story about how you got their highlighting your role in achieving the result. Remember that it typically takes multiple presentations before someone remembers someone (or something), so aim to be in front of key players on a regular basis. Keep your message consistent, use the above networking tips, and you will be more magnetic and memorable!

GiftRapper Jay Kilichand
Grown-Up Gigs Rapper/GiftRapper Jay Kilichand When I read about Jay Kila in New York magazine and his company, GiftRapped which offers customized raps, and a music video to go with it! I bopped right over to the website (what? I bop!) and spent the next half-hour watching all of his samples. They brought the biggest smile to my face (especially the Bar Mitzvah one hilarity!), and I knew you guys would love him just as much as I did. Enjoy! 1. What did you wanna be when you grew up? When I was younger I always thought I wanted to be an investment banker and go into finance. This is basically what every kid from NYC that goes to private school wants to be, because its what everyone in NYC does. As a kid you get exposed to the extravagant lifestyles associated with banking jobs and its hard not to want that for yourself. It wasnt until college that I realized my motivation to do finance was purely to make money, so I started looking for things I actually enjoyed doing that I could possibly make a career from. I had always been into into hip-hop and rap and my junior year I got a MacBook which made it really easy to record songs using Garageband. From there I just kept doing it as a hobby and it was only the past couple years that I started getting serious about rap as a career. 2. The concept behind GiftRapped just blows my mind. How the heck did you ever come up with it? So me and my partner Dan were both working at a start-up company in Silicon Valley which was a website that let you order customized songs (without video). The founders didnt want to put any more effort into the business, refused to sell it, and so the company failed and I moved back home to New York. Dan contacted me last summer saying he wanted to relaunch the site. I was hesitant until my aunt asked me to make a song about her husband for his birthday and to put pictures over the music as a video slide-show (this is the Lenny video on our homepage). She paid me for this and thats when I called Dan and said Lets do it. 3. What did/do you say to the haters (either the voice in your own head, or the voice that comes from other people) who told you GiftRapped could never make any money? Get Gifted! Hahah. There really arent TOO many haters of GiftRapped, or maybe we just havent encountered them most people actually love the idea when they first hear about it. In terms of haters, I always feel that people who say I cant do something make me want to do it more just to prove them wrong. With GiftRapped so far weve had some success, but weve just gotten started making it the company we want it to be. We still have a long ways to go, so I wont say anything and will let our actions speak for us. 4. Do ya find their needs to be a balance between the time you give GiftRapped and the time you devote to your personal music projects? Yes, definitely. I try to balance the two as best I can because I figure that promoting myself as an artist in turn helps GiftRapped and vice-versa. I also always make sure to give 100% to both GiftRapped songs and my own music, although Ive found that there is somewhat of a difference in mindset in terms of writing each type of song; if Im in a GiftRap mindset it can be harder to write a regular song and so I may have to wait a day or two to do so. 5. If you could have your present self give your pre-GiftRapped self one piece of advice, what would it be? Keep going. Dont waste so much time thinking about stuff; just do it. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ Im givin away a copy of The Spark Kit ($150value), and it can go to you!

Resume Writing For Computer Skills - Is It Difficult?
Resume Writing For Computer Skills - Is It Difficult? Many people take advantage of resume writing for computer skills, however the actual act of writing a resume can be challenging for a person with limited knowledge. This can lead to an inability to provide information that is required, and it may lead to other problems down the road.It is possible to craft a resume using computer software. However, the first thing that a person must do is to find out what exactly the job requirement is that the employer is searching for. Also, the purpose for the resume must be determined. These are the major decisions that need to be made.Once the job requirement and purpose are established, then the next step is to determine what specific skills are needed by the employer's intent. For example, if the employer is looking for someone to work in the medical industry, then the resume must include specific skills and knowledge of medicine. In addition, the employer's intent must be determined, or els e the resume will fail to show up on the employer's list. The resume should have all the career paths at the end of the document, and the resume must also describe the requirements for each career path. Each option must be discussed, from entry level to higher level positions. When the 'career path' is finished, a description of the skills is needed to show how the specific skills help make the job easier. The job writer needs to keep in mind that the resume must work with the current career trends, including college graduates, current college graduates, and professionals already in a position. If the 'career path' does not match the employee's experience level, the resume will not get read, and will not be used by the employer. The resume writer should decide how they want to approach the resume. Some resume writers find it useful to simply pick a subject and write a resume. Others choose to have each section is as long as it needs to be. Those who choose to use the longer method will want to know the exact job function they are searching for before hand.In the end, the resume writer needs to take their time and determine what the job entails, and what the employer wants in terms of skills. The end result should be a resume that shows knowledge and experience of the job and makes the employer happy.

Career Skills Leaders, Can You Make Data-Based Decisions
Career Skills Leaders, Can You Make Data-Based Decisions The next generation of leaders will need new skills to survive and thrive in the work world. Our research shows that while some traditional skills will remain as critical as ever, including the ability to communicate and delegate effectively, new skills have emerged that will be just as important. Here are the three skills that will be the most critical to future leaders looking to succeed in their jobs and get ahead in their organizations. Close Modal DialogThis is a modal window. This modal can be closed by pressing the Escape key or activating the close button. Manage a remote workforce The workplace is increasingly made up of freelance workers, full-time employees who work remotely, and companies that donât have central office spaces. Many of the worldâs largest companies, including IBM and Microsoft, even pay to have their employees work at co-working spaces like WeWork. Freelance workers currently make up 35% of the entire U.S. workforce, and in a study by Future Workplace and Field Nation, we found that about a third of companies intend to hire more freelancers than full-time employees in the next four years. In addition, telework growth between 2005 and 2014 was 102% on average and about a third of all U.S. companies now offer telecommuting. In this context, the challenge for the next generation of leaders is to maintain communication, and strong relationships, with employees they donât see everyday or at all. A leaderâs ability to use collaborative tools and video conferencing will become increasingly important for employee engagement and productivity. The skill of managing a remote workforce needs to be developed through experience instead of by reading a textbook or taking an online course. As more employees desire to work remotely, and become freelancers, this skill will become increasingly critical to organizational success. Read: 3 Strategies for Managing Your Team Remotely Use data to make better decisions Companies are increasingly hiring data scientists, or those who extract insights from data, in order to make better decisions across every department in an organization, from marketing to human resources. In 2015 alone, Glassdoor reported that the number one job in America was data scientist and LinkedIn discovered that the second most in-demand skill was âstatistical analysis and data mining.â A recent study by Gartner found that 48% of companies have invested in big data this year, which was a 3% increase over last year. As a leader, you need to ensure that you have access to big data, that you are measuring the appropriate things, and that you or one of your direct reports knows how to turn the data into actionable strategies. While soft skills like conflict solution and task delegation are important, the hard skill of data analysis is quickly becoming just as significant to long term success. This influx of data is creating a new demand for leaders to connect the work they do to actual revenue generation. Align your team to the sales department The next generation of leaders is going to have to effectively measure the return on investment (ROI) of their projects. We have more pressures than ever before to prove our worth, and the best way to do that is to align our efforts to our sales departments. If we can help them generate more leads, and close more deals, then we can justify asking for more resources, paying our teammates more, and maintaining a high status in our organization. If youâre a product manager, you should meet with your respective Sales Manager to collaborate on business development. If youâre an HR Manager, you should measure the longevity, productivity, and overall contribution of those you place. Since companies are in business to make money, your quickest path up the hierarchy and toward the C-Suite is to align with your sales department and help them drive revenue. Company Culture Is Important To Hiring Managers - Work It Daily
Company Culture Is Important To Hiring Managers - Work It Daily Company culture â" the term is bandied about so often that it has achieved near-buzz word status. But there are reasons why âcultureâ has earned such a high place in our career vernacular: It is real and it is important. While it can seem intangible, company culture manifests itself in ways small and big, from how people dress while on the job to the way decisions are made and employees are rewarded. A good cultural fit means that your values, personality, and work style are in line with those of the company and the people who work there. How well you fit a companyâs culture has a lot to do with how productive and happy you will be working there. But the concept of cultural fit comes into play long before youâre actually on the job â" your perceived fit, or lack thereof, plays a big role in whether you get a job with a particular company in the first place. HR Professional Tom Armour calls cultural fit the âsingle most important element when hiring people.â âSkills and experience are very important, but if a person does not fit with the companyâs culture they will either leave or be terminated usually in a matter of months,â says Armour, who also is co-founder of High Return Selection, a firm that helps companies recruit top-level talent. âWe often remind companies â" is this a person who you will enjoy having on the team for the next five years?â Armour says good cultural fit is a prerequisite for whether a candidate will move forward in the interview process. Specific skills, he said, can be taught while cultural fit cannot. Donn LeVie, Jr., an experienced hiring manger, sees cultural fit as a secondary consideration â" but important, nonetheless. For LeVie, author of Confessions of a Hiring Manager, cultural fit comes in after skills and experience when evaluating job candidates. There are instances when a candidate who may not be a good cultural fit has rare skills that an employer needs. âIt can be a bitter pill to swallow,â he says. âNo one wants to hire a highly skilled candidate who doesnât demonstrate â" through communication, attitude, quality of work â" commitment to the mission and vision of the corporation, but it does happen.â Whether the person making the final call on whether you get hired sees cultural fit as the end-all, be-all or whether they rank it lower than skills and experience, the fact is undeniable: Hiring managers care about cultural fit.
